Entry #9: Food Production... and Food Insecurity?

As I was looking into some information on food production, I came across a brilliant piece published by GainHealth about how the impact of our unsustainable food production processes is leading to the exact problem we are trying to prevent with the industrialization of the sector: food insecurity

With how crazy this might sound, I actually have held suspicion of this exact same phenomenon, albeit without any real evidence on my end.

The idea is really simple, though. The basis of this article is really about climate change and its impact on the environment, but tied into our processes behind major food production. The way we pollute and destroy our land is the exact way we are losing the same land to grow our food. The worst part of this all is of course the fact that the food insecure countries are fighting a much worse uphill battle that will have rippling effects on the entire globe if nothing is done to intervene. While the article itself is British, the conditions are of course the same for all of us on planet Earth.

While the article itself should not serve to discourage people from trying out novel methods of containing a looming food crisis that could destroy us rather quickly, compounded by climate change, it does serve as a valuable stepping stone to observing the crises we are experiencing in action and becoming aware of the impact our systems are having on the world around us.

In conclusion, we need to look beyond one or two films discussing the issues of the way we farm on only individual farm levels in order to see that what we are watching is something in fact occurring on a global scale. If we do not do something about the systems that lead to us utilizing such unsustainable practices, then climate change will swoop into our futures to destroy the same thing we are trying to prevent; the more we test dangerous and unnatural food systems to feed ourselves, the greater the challenge of reversing the damage and in turn killing off our own people and removing our ability to harvest high-quality food on the same land we destroyed to make it in the first place.

  1. This is a great post! I agree, this issue needs to be talked about more and more people should be informed about it. It’s a serious issue that people need to know about in order for us to do something about it. I feel like people are so careless, but there are so many others that are struggling with not having enough food. I like how you stated it’s not only occurring in one country, but the whole Earth. Amazing job!
